5 Ways A Managed Access Control System Can Improve Your Security

Managed_AccessBusinesses with less than 100 employees tend to be the most vulnerable to losses caused by internal theft and workplace violence. When you add to that external threats from would-be thieves and violent criminals to the mix, the overall security risks to a small business increase dramatically.

A managed access control system is one of the easiest, most cost-effective methods of increasing security at your store, site or office.

One of the most important benefits from using a managed access control system is that it gives you more control over your business, who's coming and going, and this equates to an immediate reduction in your security risks.

I've identified 5 ways a managed access control system can improve your security:

  1. A managed access control system prevents unauthorized persons from accessing certain areas on your site.  You can control the level of access for each of your employees, while restricting access to non-employees at the same time.  By implementing this system, you'll be reducing the amount of traffic, and therefore the risk, of theft or vandalism, simply by limiting the amount of employees and customers who have access to the area.  This is an effective method for protecting secure data, "hot products" often sold on the street, or even small items that are easily pocketed, such as office supplies or merchandise.  It's also an effective method of restricting criminals who may attempt to walk into unlocked store rooms or offices to grab cash, employee items, or your products and goods, as it adds an extra security measure they need to overcome.

    2.  Lack of supervision and working in isolation are contributing factors to occupational fraud and employee theft.  Managed access control will help you remove these opportunities by providing an extra form of supervision and employee monitoring.  Not only can you control access to key areas in your business, you'll also be able to monitor employee access throughout the day. If you have a change in staff schedules, or are dealing with a disgruntled employee, you can easily change or restrict access levels by calling our central monitoring station to make the change for you, or changing access levels yourself online.

    3.  While there are many highly motivated criminals who will go above and beyond to commit theft, most criminals look for an opportunity to target businesses that offers little risk with high reward.  Implementing an effective access system reduces the opportunity for "easy" theft, helping to reduce your overall risk.  Walking into your office and stealing valuables from employee desks, or sneaking into your open storeroom and grabbing precious inventory and goods, will no longer be appealing opportunities, as the ease of theft will be reduced.

    4.  Our Sonitrol managed access control system for example, can control the entry and exit points at your building.  This will help you control who has access to your building and during what time of day. Regular employees should be provided access to your facility during their shift using a keyless access card or key fob, however, you can also restrict access after-hours.  If your business runs 24 hours, you can increase security overnight to add an extra layer of protection for employees who work the late shift.  Controlling access points reduces risk of workplace violence and theft by restricting unauthorized persons from entering the building.

    5.  In the event of an emergency situation, you can employ an administrative control to trigger emergency security measures.  This can be as far reaching as denying all access in or out of a building by denying ID access, or as simple as regulating administrative access to a particular area. Many of these systems can be customized to ensure you have the amount of control you want with as little work as possible on your part.
