Why Do I Keep Getting False Alarms?

False Alarm CostsRegular false alarms can cost you.  At minimum, you’ll be charged a fine starting at $50 and escalating to $300 to help your local Police department recover their costs. … but if you have a poor history with 3 or more false alarms, Police response will be canceled for one year or you’ll be faced with a significant fine to be re-instated with proof of how you have eliminated the false alarm problem. Not to mention that most insurance companies will eliminate coverage if Police do not respond to an unverified alarm. A year is a long time to be vulnerable to criminals with no Police response and no insurance coverage.

You have to make sure when you have an alarm go off the Police will respond.  If you have a high false alarm history you will lack credibility from those repeated false alarm incidents.

Why do you keep getting false alarms?

In the USA Police respond to more than 36 million burglar alarm activations a year, at a cost over $1.8 billion. Most of these alarm activations are from conventional alarms and a staggering number are false alarms.

Conventional burglar alarms typically use motion sensors, glass break sensors, or door contact sensors to identify a break-in.  Sometimes the alarm can go off just with a thunderstorm moving through, the wind blows and the windows rattle.  That's why the vast majority of conventional burglar alarms are false.

Motion sensors trip to power surges or any item that moves in its view including fluctuations in heat, flash lights and head lights. Glass break sensors trip to power surges, street cars, dump trucks, snow plows, salt spreaders, and anything banging on a window - even a newspaper. And door contacts trip to rain water shorting out wires, or doors that have movement when they are closed.  But the majority of false alarms are caused by employees or cleaning staff.

All of these false alarms cause problems because there is no verification …. we verify through audio and video so luckily we can eliminate the majority of these false alarms.

Another reason is that you’ve chosen the wrong alarm system to start with, such as a conventional security alarm with enhanced call verification.  All this means is that the security company will call multiple “key holders” to confirm if they really want a Police dispatch.  This is often a slow process and it's not really the security solution you’re looking for?

What if your alarm goes off in the middle of the night? Are you going to wake up and head into the office at 2 a.m. to see if there is a break-in in progress? Not only would this be dangerous if a crime is taking place, but do you really want to go verify an alarm yourself in the middle of the night?

And what if a crime is actually taking place?  This type of verification will cause a huge delay in response.  By the time the security company recognizes there is a breach in their system and gets a hold of one of the key holders (which may be difficult depending on the time of day) who then verify the alarm by visiting the office or viewing remotely, and only then dispatch Police…the criminal has already gotten clean away.

What Can You Do To Prevent False Alarms?

While self-verification and proper alarm training are suggested solutions for conventional false alarms, the reality is, the most effective solution for false alarms is an verified security system using verified audio and video.

Verified alarms are the #1 way to stop false alarms.

In the event that an alarm is triggered, our central monitoring station will verify the alarm for you immediately, without delay.  Our verified audio and video solutions are unique in the marketplace … there is no delay between the alarm being triggered and our expert operators tuning in.  We quickly identify if a crime is in progress and dispatch the Police immediately. If it’s a false alarm, we simply reset the system.

The most effective response to false alarms is a VERIFIED RESPONSE, confirming in real-time that criminal activity is taking place with live audio and video verification.

Typical burglar alarm companies have false alarms 98% of the time. We think this is unacceptable….. a conventional alarm works 2% of the time…. How can anyone sell you one of these?

Sonitrol Western Canada's audio and video security technology allows our operators to verify whether a break-in is in progress, or if it's a false alarm. This keeps our false alarm rate low at an industry low 3% and our arrest rate very high, with over 172,000 criminal apprehensions to date. Therefore, when Police get a call from Sonitrol Western Canada they know it's real and they respond.

Sonitrol has over 172,000 apprehensions since 1977…. Conventional alarms won’t have 10% of that.

Sonitrol's monitoring experts hear, analyze and report noises inside a protected building. This gives Police accurate, real-time information while they are en route to the scene. Early and verified detection means we have strong working relationships with law enforcement agencies.

Police respond to Sonitrol alarms in 3 minutes on average … in all communities including verified only.

Boasting the highest criminal apprehension rate in the security industry, it's no wonder our customers are very happy customers and with excellent community relations with law enforcement and Police departments across our region - we are the trusted alarm solution.

Therefore we're very proud of our reputation supporting and assisting law enforcement agencies and local police departments across Western Canada. Review here all the false alarm policies and fines from municipalities across our region.

Don’t waste your money installing a conventional alarm with a 2% reliability rate. Help Police make our communities safer by catching criminals in the act…. rather than chasing after false alarms.
