Vancouver Police reportedly responded to a break-in at a Dunbar Street card and collectibles shop at 2:58 a.m. on August 3. According to the Castanet report, two masked suspects pried open the rear door, then used a stolen Ford pickup truck and a rope to pull the safe out of the business.
The truck was recovered later that morning in Surrey, abandoned and still running, and taken in for forensic analysis. Investigators are now asking the public for information, dashcam footage, and security video from the area.
That is the right investigative step, and it is often how these files get solved.
But from the owner’s side of the counter, the hard part is already finished. The rear door is damaged. The safe is gone. The inventory is gone. Whatever the cameras recorded, they recorded it while nobody was on the way.
It is worth slowing down and looking at what this crew actually had to do, because the sequence is the whole story.
Every one of those steps makes noise. Every one of them takes time.
This was not a grab from a display case on the way past. It was a physical, noisy, multi-stage job carried out inside a closed business, and it ran to completion.
Time is the only asset a business owner really has once a break-in has started. This crew had all of it.
If inventory is valuable enough to keep in a safe, and valuable enough that someone will steal a pickup truck to get at it, the question is not whether the store had an alarm.
Most stores have an alarm.
The real question is what that alarm was designed to accomplish.
