Fire safety should be a top priority for any business. From a financial perspective, a fire can be costly. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, fire and explosions result in more than $2.3 billion in damage every year.

More importantly, it ensures you meet insurance requirements and employment standards, gives you and your employees peace of mind and keeps everyone safe.

But fire safety is a multistep process and not all businesses are doing everything they can to prevent fire. So here are some tips to help enhance your fire safety and better protect your business.

25 Misconceptions about commercial security systems eBook

Create an emergency evacuation plan

Protecting your business from fire is crucial, but nothing is more important than the welfare of your employees and customers.

Your company should have clear steps in place for all staff to follow so that your employees know exactly what to do to keep themselves and any customers safe. This includes having unobstructed emergency exits, installing a fire alarm, practicing evacuation drills and regularly testing employees and systems.

Know your insurance and industry regulations

I mentioned earlier that proper fire safety can ensure you meet insurance requirements and employment standards.

The one caveat is that every business has different rules and regulations. To ensure you’re meeting regulations in your specific industry, you need to do proper research or speak to a professional who knows what is required. Otherwise, you may be forfeiting your insurance in the event of a fire outbreak. Even worse … you may be at risk for hefty fines and possible lawsuits.

Have working fire extinguishers

Make sure your company has fire extinguishers installed strategically around your business’s premises and that all of them are properly tagged and inspected to ensure they’re working effectively.

You also want to train your employees on the proper ways to handle fire extinguishers and when they should (and shouldn’t) be used. This can help your company minimize the threat of small accidental fires turning into more serious dangers.

Take preventative measures

There are a number of steps any business can take to help reduce the risk of fires starting in the first place.

  • Keep your work areas free of paper waste
  • Inspect electrical cords regularly and replacing damaged cords
  • Don’t overload circuits
  • Turn off appliances when not in use
  • Leave space around heaters and other appliances so that they can properly ventilate
  • Properly store combustible materials and cleaning products
  • Ensure boxes and materials aren’t stored in stairwells where they can be both a fire and safety hazard
  • Smoke outside of the building in designated areas with appropriate disposal units for butts and ashes
  • Maintain equipment to avoid accidental fire
  • Implement spill control procedures for hazardous waste spills

You also want to minimize arson risks by locking doors, installing security systems, and keeping outside areas free of combustibles.

Implement an innovative fire alarm monitoring security

Unfortunately, no matter how many preventative steps you take, there’s no sure way to guarantee your business is safe from fire.

That is why, to prevent loss in the case of fire, you need to ensure you have systems in place for the early detection and verification of fires, as well as quick response of emergency services.

Sonitrol Western Canada’s unique fire detection system combines both 24-hour monitoring and experienced operators in a central monitoring center. Once a fire is detected, our monitoring experts will then verify it.
