Wired of WIFI securitySecurity systems are vital for any business from retail to property management to construction and more. When choosing a system, there are many factors to consider. One important factor is whether that system will be wired or wireless.

When deciding between the two, it’s important to keep in mind that different components of a security system can be wired or wireless. Wired or wireless could refer to how the sensors communicate with the control panel, how the control panel communicates with the monitoring station or how the system gets its power.

It’s also important to remember that there is no one size fits all solution. What works for your business will depend on your location, layout, preferences and more.

To help you decide which option makes the most sense for you, let’s look at the difference between them and some of the pros and cons.

Wired Business Security

Wired security systems connect sensors to the control panels using wires that are usually concealed in the walls or under floors.

Pros

  • Incredibly reliable and rarely experience interference due to weather
  • Not susceptible to hacking or jamming
  • Known for consistent video/audio quality
  • Constantly powered so long as the electricity stays on
  • Ideal for permanent spaces
  • Able to support larger systems

Cons

  • Cannot be easily moved if you relocate
  • Are more complex to install
  • Are at risk of wires being cut
  • Can be affected by power outages

Wireless Business Security

Wireless security systems don’t have any hardware connections and are instead controlled using remote access.

Pros

  • Are easier to install, scale, move and upgrade as cables do not need to be run through the property
  • Can be placed in locations that wired systems may be more difficult to install
  • Can’t have their wires cut to disconnect them
  • Not affected by power outages

Cons

  • More prone to signal interference and inconsistent video/audio quality
  • Limited by signal distance
  • Dependent on batteries to keep them up and running
  • At risk of being hacked or jammed unless proper security protocols are in place
