What Type Of Security System Is Best For Restaurants?
Most people don't associate a restaurant with the need to have a security system, but it's a fact that crimes of all types can occur in and around restaurants, at all times of the day and night. And if we were to include fast food restaurants and some types of clubs and bars into this category, then you can see that the risk of crime is indeed real, and customers and employees have to be protected.
So how would you rate your restaurant security?
Here are some of the typical security questions we would ask the manager of a restaurant:
Is your restaurant a safe work environment?
Are you protected from employee theft, and do you need to monitor your employees?
Are you well protected from break-ins, vandalism and robbery?
Do you have areas of your restaurant that require controlled and managed access?
Do you have central station monitoring in place if your freezer fails?
Are you protected during both business hours and after you close?
Does your security system use verified alarms?
If you’ve answered no to any of those questions, your business, customers and employees may be at risk from more than just the competitor down the street.
A Full Menu of Security Options
Now that you have determined your security needs - do you need a new security system, or can you use an upgrade? Have you considered security solutions that are customized for the restaurant business?
Where do you start?
- Firstly I recommend implementing a Verified Security System that is based on audio verification rather than motion detection. Audio verification results in faster Police response times and higher rates of apprehension, and if you have a problem you'll want the Police there fast.
- Use CCTV monitoring both inside and outside of your restaurant. This type of monitoring is the perfect complement to audio verification, with the added benefit of allowing management to remotely monitor staff activity both recorded and live. This will encourage proper staff action while you are not on site and deter employee theft, damage of property and vandalism.
- Monitor the temperature of your freezers to ensure you do not lose a freezer full of food due to a malfunction. You should also consider a security system that reacts to smoke, heat and fire to prevent loss and injury.
- Control which employees have access to your restaurant at specific times of day with a managed access control system. Dayshift employees should not have access to your restaurant in the evening or after hours. The same applies to night shift. In addition, you can limit access to storage rooms and offices that contain expensive stock or safes.
- Implement panic buttons in different areas of your restaurant. Offices, registers, service areas and storage rooms are areas where employees may be at risk and a panic button could prove to be a major help as on activation they allow Sonitrol to pass live intelligence on to responding police so they respond appropriately.
- Make sure employees working the evening shift leave in groups of two. This system will work best if you ensure your parking area is secure with sufficient lighting and security monitoring.
- Install CCTV video cameras to monitor high risk areas. Cash registers, exits, parking lots and storage areas (ex. Liquor storage in bars) may be areas to consider.
