![Secure Your Construction Site with Sonitrol SonaVision](https://www.sonitrolwesterncanada.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog_Images/mining-440743_640.jpg?width=400&name=mining-440743_640.jpg "Secure Your Construction Site with Sonitrol SonaVision")Construction sites are a favourite target for the theft of valuable items and vandalism. If you're getting ready for your spring construction project then you should also be planning for your construction site security.

According to the US Database of Stolen Heavy Equipment - [The National Equipment Register](http://www.ner.net/) - one-third of construction site thefts are reported on Monday mornings (this is because they're broken into over weekends and not noticed until employees show up Monday for work) , and more than 70 percent of thefts are from construction sites with a lack of adequate security, if any. In one year, John Deere equipment was the brand most targeted by thieves with [2,445 thefts reported](https://www.sonitrolwesterncanada.com/hubfs/PDF_Documents/NICB2013%20Theft%20Report.pdf). Next was [Kubota at 1,025, Bobcat at 721, Caterpillar at 679 and Toro, rounding out the top 5 with 364](https://www.sonitrolwesterncanada.com/hubfs/PDF_Documents/NICB2013%20Theft%20Report.pdf).

Whether you’re starting from the ground up, or renovating an existing building, you’re vulnerable to break-ins, vandalism, fire and other threats.

Unprotected construction sites have a high risk of theft of uninstalled materials, equipment (such as copper cables), and installed materials, such as copper wire & pipes just ripped out of walls. You have valuable equipment to protect and schedules to meet - security should be top of your mind.

Here a few things you can do to better [protect your construction site](https://www.sonitrolwesterncanada.com/security-for-construction-sites-video-monitoring-cctv-cameras-verified-video-burglar-alarms) by preventing equipment theft and vandalism.

**Inventory Your Assets**

Identify the equipment you currently have. Keep the information up to date and secure. A good recommendation is to take pictures of the larger equipment. Always track newly purchased items immediately and keep a record of them in a secure place.

**Secure Your Perimeter**

Secure the perimeter and make sure your site is well lit and locked up. Many construction sites have large, open spaces, making them a welcome target.

Traditionally, construction companies have put up construction fencing, trying to keep people out. This obviously keeps the honest person out, but actually, they do little to prevent criminals getting in.

A popular construction site security solution was once to employ guards, but the problem with security guards is that they're expensive (costing approx. $6,000 to $10,000 a month), they cannot view the whole construction site with one set of eyes, and they can be unreliable and corruptible. Not everyone can stay awake every night of the week, especially when there's nothing going on … so some guards go to sleep on the job.  Sometimes guards even participate in the actual crime, because they're not well paid, or they’re vulnerable. So construction site guards have always been a challenge and they haven’t really worked out well for the construction industry.

**Use A Quality Construction Security Technology Solution**

The solution to construction site security is to use [SonaVision](https://www.sonitrolwesterncanada.com/sonitrol-sonavision-video-monitoring-cctv-surveillance), an advanced, real-time, heat and motion video monitoring technology, a solution that Sonitrol developed and pioneered for construction sites over the past 10 years.

Sonitrol has developed SonaVision, as a hard-wired or wireless, integrated security solution that uses advanced video and motion detection equipment to create an electronic perimeter around the construction site perimeter.

It uses infrared, so we see in the dark. When the system is armed it will sense any heat and movement that happens around the construction compound, so when it spots the movement of a person jumping the fence in the middle of the night, we can instantly see it’s something bad, it's a verified break-in, so we dispatch the police immediately.

SonaVision is vastly superior to standard, digital recorder based monitored video, and static CCTV cameras that simply record video, because SonaVision detection is immediate and because it is a verified alarm, police will respond to … quickly and without question. (Check out our references and testimonials and video clips on our website.)

When the police arrive, and before the vandal can damage the property, or the thief steals a bobcat or copper wire, they are apprehended - fast.
