New Laws Haven’t Slowed Down Catalytic Converter Thefts

In November of 2020 new provisions were added to the Protecting Alberta Industry from Theft Act to help make it more difficult for criminals to sell stolen scrap metal. These provisions included:

  • Reporting transactions involving specific forms of metal (such as catalytic converters) to a central law enforcement database. Required information includes:
    • Seller name, address, business name and seller ID number
    • Date and time of the transaction
    • Description and weight of the metal
    • Information on the vehicle used to deliver the metal including make, model, colour and license plate
  • Only allowing traceable payments for these transactions (i.e. no cash allowed)

Alberta: Catalytic Converter Theft on the Rise, Secure Your Dealership.

But even with increased legislation, catalytic converter thefts are on the rise in Alberta. In fact, between November 1, 2020 and October 1, 2021 there were 2,484 catalytic converter thefts reported. This is a 46 percent increase over the previous year (1,697 catalytic converters stolen).

That is why business owners across Alberta (and other western provinces) need to take control of the situation. To do this, you need to protect your dealerships, parking lots and vehicle compounds. And the best way to do that is with a verified security solution.

What is verified security?

Unlike CCTV systems that simply record thefts as they occur, verified alarm solutions monitor your premises for criminal activity. Video and/or audio feed is then sent to a security expert in a 24/7 central monitoring station, who is able to verify whether the alarm is a real threat. Once verified, your local police department is notified immediately with real-time updates on the crime as it takes place.

Since the alarm is verified and police know its real, response times are faster. In fact, the average response time for Sonitrol verified alarms is just 3.5 minutes across North America. That’s substantially lower than the staggering 45-minute response time of traditional CCTV surveillance, which are known for their high false alarm rates. This means there’s a greater chance of apprehension and reduced damage/losses.

But these aren’t the only reasons Sonitrol’s verified alarms are the best solution for your business.

Sonitrol Western Canada has been protecting vehicle compounds and dealerships for more than 50 years with our industry expertise, innovative technology, proven results and our unique Commitment to Service guarantee.
