Security Camera Registries: Are They a Good Solution?

Security Camera Registries

Cities across Canada are trying to find ways to help businesses and residents feel safer, and improve their security measures. One program that is becoming increasingly common in the fight against crime is security camera registries.

Security camera registries are a voluntary, free initiative that encourage residents and businesses to complete a brief registration form to identify the location of their external-facing cameras.

The aim of these registries is that if an incident happens in the area of your business, the local police departments have a list of residents and businesses that they can contact to ask if their camera has captured any relevant footage.

Police do not have access to the camera equipment or feed, and camera owners can decline to participate when contacted. This security footage has been critical in investigations across Canada over the past few years.

An example of this in Western Canada is the one implemented by the Alberta District RCMP Detachment, Crime CAPTURE (Community Assisted Policing Through Use Of Recorded Evidence).

Under the CAPTURE program, businesses and residents can voluntarily register the location of their security cameras on a secure site. If a crime occurs in the area, the RCMP can reach out to registered camera owners and request footage.

While this is a great way to work as a community to keep crime at bay, it’s important that as a business owner, you do not rely on others to capture crimes on your property. It’s helpful to participate in these initiatives, but you shouldn’t rely on them to protect your own business.

Instead, you should be looking for a full coverage verified security solution that ensures all areas of your business, inside and out, are secure and monitored.

Why choose Sonitrol Western Canada?

Unlike most conventional alarms, which only provide limited detection, Sonitrol security systems offer wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling, volumetric coverage to meet sophisticated threats.

That means that every inch of your business and property can be covered, making it less necessary for authorities to reach out to register camera owners to solve a crime on your property. In fact, Sonitrol goes one step further and helps police catch criminals on your property red-handed.

Sonitrol security systems don’t just store important footage, they are also monitored by security experts in a central monitoring location. That means our team of security professionals will verify a crime taking place and contact authorities directly.

They can then provide real time updates about what the criminal is doing and where they are. This increases the rate of apprehension as the crime is occurring, which makes reviewing footage after the incident an unnecessary step when catching a criminal.

Monitored security also helps reduce false alarm rates because we only report true crime events. This ability is increasingly important as more and more communities adopt Verified Video Surveillance Response Policies ... and our very low 3 percent false alarm rate, coupled with the partnerships Sonitrol has built with local police, is why local police departments hurry to Sonitrol alarms and not to others.

And, if you want to participate in a community wide security solution, like a security registry program, you can not only feel confident that you are protected but that you are also helping to capture criminals with your state-of-the-art security system.
