# Crime is up in British Columbia and Your Business Needs to be Prepared

![British Columbia Crime Increase](https://www.sonitrolwesterncanada.com/hs-fs/hubfs/British%20Columbia%20Crime%20Increase.png?width=1200&name=British%20Columbia%20Crime%20Increase.png)In September, Marquis Wine Cellar in Vancouver had thieves use blow torches to break in and steal an e-bike. And that is just one of many stories being shared by Vancouver business owners. 

Business owners are seeing more crime, vandalism and break and enters. In fact, the West End Community police say that from April to September of 2021 there has been a [50% increase in crimes](https://bc.ctvnews.ca/2-arrested-after-complex-break-in-bike-theft-in-vancouver-s-west-end-1.5642733). From 2020 to 2021 there is expected to be a [43% increase in violent shoplifting](https://bc.ctvnews.ca/do-you-feel-safe-in-downtown-vancouver-complaints-of-stranger-assaults-violent-shoplifting-prompt-roundtable-discussions-1.5641681).

Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent on repairs by downtown business owners in just a couple of months and, according to the Vancouver Police, there were [over 1,500 assaults](https://bc.ctvnews.ca/2-arrested-after-complex-break-in-bike-theft-in-vancouver-s-west-end-1.5642733) in the last year. 

And it isn’t just in the city. Just last month, [$60,000 worth of lawn mowers were stolen](https://globalnews.ca/news/8266077/lawn-mower-theft-salmon-arm/) from a store in Solomon Arms. In Kelowna, [over $30,000 of merchandise was stolen](https://bc.ctvnews.ca/2-metro-vancouver-residents-arrested-after-30k-in-kitchen-appliances-tools-stolen-from-kelowna-businesses-1.5631521) from multiple businesses. 

It’s no wonder that business owners across British Columbia are looking to their leaders for solutions …

1. Remove valuable products and displays from store windows. This will help reduce smash and grabs.
