# Pharmacies and Clinics Need Integrated Security Systems

Professionally organized criminals steal high-value items like electronics and jewellery and cars, but they also steal drugs from illegal sources and retail outlets like pharmacies. And it’s not just the pros that target pharmacies and healthcare facilities. Adult individuals, criminal gangs, and even juveniles will go after drugs that they can sell quickly.

Take, for example, the [string of robberies the Toronto police were investigating](https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2020/03/09/teen-arrested-after-string-of-pharmacies-robbed-police-say.html) in March. Police were called out to 3 pharmacies, The West Mall, Rexdale Boulevard, and Elmhurst Drive, in the afternoon - to respond to drug theft. “In each incident, four male suspects entered the store while concealing their identities with masks and gloves,” a police press release read. “One of the suspects was armed with a handgun and made demands for money and drugs.” The suspects got away with cash and drugs, leaving in a pickup truck driven by a 14-year-old boy. The youth was caught and charged with three counts of robbery with a weapon and three counts of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, among other charges. The other suspects were at large at the time the article was published in the [Toronto Star](https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2020/03/09/teen-arrested-after-string-of-pharmacies-robbed-police-say.html). 

Pharmacy crime is taking place across Canada. In the same month as the Toronto crime, the RCMP in Trail B.C. were searching for a suspect in connection with an armed robbery at a local pharmacy. A female suspect demanded methadone at the counter of a Safeway pharmacy on Second Avenue. "The suspect was reportedly seen in possession of a black handgun, which was concealed in a re-usable shopping bag," said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey with the RCMP Southeast District in a news release. "It is very fortunate that no one was injured as a result of this brazen daytime crime."
